The best way to control your expenses

Goal

When we all found ourselves locked up due to the pandemic, and with a lot of free time, the idea of creating an app that allowed me to control my expenses came up. A custom built app where I could categorize and see how much or how little I can still spend month to month.

The tool

Investigating and comparing several tools that minimize the use of code to create apps, I came across Glide Apps and although at first I started the project on a template (there are several that were similar to what I wanted) I needed to customize several fields and components so that they fit exactly in what I was looking for.

I had done my expense records manually for years, but now in a more organized way, and especially from anywhere in the world, it would be much more useful to me.

Naming

In Ecuador it is very common to say “tangerine” (mandarina in Spanish) to people who have someone to report to constantly. In other words, they are people who have to answer to someone, usually a significant other. I found it funny to bring that concept to an app that, far from reporting constantly to a person, it would help users control their monthly expenses and establish certain limits on them.

In a certain way, an indirectly inspiration came from Guac App, an app that appeared to me multiple times as an advertisement on my timeline. Even with several apps that performed similar tasks, I preferred to do something custom, and therefore I decided to start the construction of Tangerine App.

What was learned

I have always been interested in making the most of the tools I discover, and this time was no exception. Little by little I learned how to do things, how to change names to elements, how the logic behind the formulas for monthly calculations worked and, in the end, I am happy with the product achieved. Glide Apps is built in such a way that anyone can make apps from Google Sheets, and I love that.
